Box per kg or pack by garment count: which is better in 2026
Share
A Mix Brand-tier vintage box sold per kg holds on average 3-4 garments per kilo: at 14,40 €/kg (Grade A) one garment costs 3,60-4,80 €. A 5-piece pack sold at 45 € costs 9 € per garment, and those 5 garments, put on the scale, weigh about 1-1,5 kg. The whole difference lies in how the offer is expressed: by weight or by count. In this guide we put the two systems side by side, with the real weights of the garments, the WintageClub list prices read on 25/10/2026 and the sources at the bottom, so you can redo the maths yourself before every purchase.
Why "by weight" and "by count" seem incomparable, but are not
Whoever sells boxes per kg states a price per kilo and an estimate of garments per kilo. Whoever sells by count states a price for the pack (5, 10, 15 garments) and the category. To compare them you just need to convert both into euros per garment, and the bridge is the average weight of a garment, which manufacturers and courier guides publish because it is needed to calculate shipping.
- Box per kg: € per garment = price per kg × average garment weight (in kg). Example: 14,40 × 0,16 = 2,30 € for a 160 g t-shirt.
- Pack by count: € per garment = pack price ÷ number of garments (+ shipping if not included). Example: 45 ÷ 5 = 9 €.
The "5 garments for 45 €" pack is the benchmark we will use throughout the article: some sellers offer 5-piece packs in that range, others higher or lower. Swap in your own number and the method does not change.
How much a vintage garment weighs and how many fit in 1 kg
The weights below come from shipping guides and manufacturers (sources at the bottom), for an average adult size, dry garment with no packaging. Vintage from the 90s-2000s tends to weigh a bit more than today's fast fashion (thicker cottons, stiffer denim). The fourth column is the cost per garment with a Mix Brand KiloBox 5 kg Grade A at 72 € (14,40 €/kg), compared with the 9 € per garment of the benchmark pack.
| Category | Average weight | Garments in 1 kg | €/garment Mix Grade A (14,40 €/kg) | €/garment 5-pack at 45 € |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T-shirt | 140-185 g | 5-7 | 2,00-2,70 € | 9,00 € |
| Polo shirt | 170-255 g | 4-6 | 2,40-3,70 € | 9,00 € |
| Shirt | 170-255 g (flannel 285-455 g) | 4-6 (flannel 2-3) | 2,40-3,70 € (flannel 4,10-6,50 €) | 9,00 € |
| Crewneck sweatshirt / hoodie | 340-450 g | 2-3 | 4,90-6,50 € | 9,00 € |
| Track jacket (nylon/polyester) | about 250-450 g* | 2-4 | 3,60-6,50 € | 9,00 € |
| Jeans | 500-770 g (men's), 360-640 g (women's) | 1-2 | 7,20-11,10 € | 9,00 € |
| Denim jacket | 570-1.000 g | 1-2 | 8,20-14,40 € | 9,00 € |
| Coat / winter jacket | 900-1.800 g | less than 1 | 13,00-26,00 € | 9,00 € |
*The track jacket does not appear as a separate entry in the courier tables: the value is placed between the windbreaker (110-225 g) and the softshell (450-730 g) from the same source. Check with your own scale.
The table says three things. For t-shirts, polo shirts, shirts, sweatshirts and track jackets the box per kg costs between half and a quarter per garment compared with the benchmark pack. On jeans the gap narrows, because a pair of jeans weighs four times a t-shirt. On coats the pack by count can cost less, because by weight you pay for the fabric: the most sensible per-piece offers are those on heavy garments, the least sensible are packs of t-shirts and sweatshirts.
The scale test: how much do 5 garments weigh?
A typical 5-piece pack of mixed sportswear: 2 sweatshirts (400 g each), 2 t-shirts (170 g each) and one track jacket (350 g). Total 1.490 g. In a box per kg the same goods cost 21,50 € at 14,40 €/kg and 16,40 € at 11 €/kg (Grade B); the pack costs 45 € plus any shipping. If the pack is t-shirts only, 5 garments weigh 700-900 g: all five fit in 1 kg, with room to spare, and cost 10-13 € in Grade A.
Home check: weigh the next 5 garments you sell on Vinted, add up the grams and multiply by the price per kg of the box you are considering. That is the "per-kg equivalent" cost of the pack.
When the pack by count is the better deal
The per-piece format is not wrong: it meets different needs. It makes sense when:
- You want garments picked one by one, with brand, size and model known before you pay. This is the case with lots that have a photo of every garment: you pay for the selection, not the quantity.
- You do not want to deal with rejects. In a box per kg a share of garments (10-15% in our case) may be of a lower grade than stated; in a photographed pack you know exactly what is coming.
- Your starting budget is minimal and you want to try a single category before buying in volume.
- You buy heavy garments: coats, winter jackets, leather jackets. Here, by count you often pay less than by weight.
Read the fine print, though: in some wholesale offers by count the number is stated as "±10%" and the exact model "may vary": the same tolerance as boxes per kg, expressed in another way.
When the box per kg is the better deal
- Volume and variety. With 5 kg of Mix Brand you get about 15-20 garments across sweatshirts, t-shirts, polo shirts, shirts, denim and jackets, in mixed sizes.
- Lower cost per garment on light categories, the ones that move fastest on Vinted. An industry analysis estimates the average price of a top on Vinted at around 25 dollars in 2026 (20 in 2025): with a purchase cost of 2-5 € there is room for price, Buyer Protection and discounts.
- Scalability. The price per kg drops as you go up in size (5, 10, 20, 50 kg) and you choose the grade: Grade A or Grade B depending on how much time you have for small fixes.
- Niches with stated weight. In the Levi's Only Box (5 kg Grade B, 65 €) you get 6-8 pairs of jeans: 8-11 € per pair, from a single brand. In the KiloBox Brand Premium (3 kg Grade A, 99 €, 33 €/kg) the cost per garment goes up because the selection is Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Lacoste: it should be compared with per-piece lots of those brands, not with the mix.
No box, per kg or by count, guarantees a margin: your profit depends on how you photograph, price and ship. The full maths is in the article on how much you really earn reselling vintage.
What to check in an offer, per kg or per piece
- Explicit unit of measure. Net weight in kg with an estimate of garments per kg, or an exact number of garments. "About 10 pieces" with no weight cannot be compared with anything.
- Grade and tolerance. What "Grade A" means for that seller and what share of off-grade garments they are willing to ship. We state 10-15%; if it is not written down, ask.
- Real photos of the lot or of the type of lot. In hand-picked packs you should see every garment.
- Shipping included or not. A 45 € pack plus shipping and a 54,90 € box with shipping included cannot be compared on the headline price: add to cart and read the total.
- Written guarantee. On our boxes the lot conformity guarantee lasts 7 days from delivery, with 1:1 replacement or credit.
- Sizes. Many packs are a single size (all L, all XL): convenient for a shop, less so for Vinted, where variety widens your audience.
- Who is selling. VAT number, registered address, invoice: we cover this in the guide to vintage suppliers for resellers.
Full worked example: Trial 3 kg and Mix 5 kg
Case 1, first purchase. The KiloBox Trial 3 kg costs 54,90 € shipping included (Grade A, one purchase per customer, Italy only). With 3-4 garments per kg you get 9-12 garments: 4,60-6,10 € per garment, shipping included. A 5-pack at 45 €: 9 € per garment plus transport, for about 1-1,5 kg of goods. For the same spend, about 55 €, with the Trial you get twice as many garments.
Case 2, already selling. The Mix Brand KiloBox 5 kg Grade A costs 72 € (14,40 €/kg): 15-20 garments, 3,60-4,80 € per garment, plus the shipping you see in the cart (free in Italy from 139 €, in the EU from 249 €, islands excluded). In Grade B, 55 € (11 €/kg): 2,75-3,70 € per garment, with more fixing work. To get 15-20 garments with 5-packs at 45 € you need 3-4 of them: 135-180 € plus shipping. Apply the 10-15% tolerance: even discarding 2-3 garments out of 20, the cost of the remaining garments stays under 5 €.
The Trial is for checking grade and assortment once, the Mix is for carrying on. For the right size there is the guide to choosing the Kilo Box for your business.
What offers by garment count usually do not spell out
This is information the per-piece format does not oblige anyone to write, and that you have to reconstruct yourself.
- The weight. Without the weight you cannot calculate the equivalent price per kg: 45 € for 1-1,5 kg of sportswear is 30-45 €/kg.
- The composition. "5 sportswear garments" can mean 4 t-shirts and 1 sweatshirt or the other way round: the value changes a lot, the pack price does not.
- The shipping. In the lots by count observed on international marketplaces, transport can exceed 40% of the price. Always add it.
- Repeatability. A hand-picked pack is often a one-off; a box per kg has a price and composition that repeat with every order, which simplifies the pricing work on Vinted.
In short
Light garments in quantity: box per kg. Heavy garments picked one by one: by count, with a photo of every garment. Jeans: the two systems come close and grade and brand matter (the guide to the Levi's jeans box per kilo does the maths on denim). In any case convert to €/garment using the real weight, add shipping, read the tolerance and the guarantee. If you want to do the scale test, the KiloBox Trial 3 kg is the format designed for it; the 5 to 50 kg sizes are in the box per kilo and vintage clothing box per kg collections. If you are starting from scratch, begin with the guide to selling on Vinted.
Frequently asked questions
How many garments are there in 1 kg of vintage clothing?
It depends on the category: 5-7 t-shirts, 4-6 polo shirts or shirts, 2-3 sweatshirts, 1-2 pairs of jeans, less than one coat. In a mix of sportswear and casual like the Mix Brand KiloBox the average is 3-4 garments per kg, that is 15-20 garments in 5 kg.
How much does one garment cost in a box per kg?
With the Mix Brand 5 kg Grade A at 72 € (14,40 €/kg) one garment costs on average 3,60-4,80 €; in Grade B (55 €, 11 €/kg) 2,75-3,70 €. A 160 g t-shirt costs about 2,30 € in Grade A, a 400 g sweatshirt about 5,80 €. List prices read on 25/10/2026.
How much does a 5-garment pack at 45 € cost per kg?
Five garments of mixed sportswear weigh about 1-1,5 kg, so 45 € is equivalent to 30-45 €/kg, shipping excluded. Five t-shirts alone weigh 700-900 g: in that case the equivalent price exceeds 50 €/kg.
When is it better to buy by garment count instead of per kg?
When you want individually picked garments with photos, size and brand known, when you do not want to deal with any rejects, or when you buy heavy garments such as coats and leather jackets, where the cost by weight goes up. For t-shirts, sweatshirts and track jackets in quantity, the kg costs less per garment.
What happens if the box per kg does not match what was stated?
On WintageClub boxes a 10-15% tolerance of lower-grade garments is stated; beyond that threshold the lot conformity guarantee applies for 7 days from delivery, with 1:1 replacement or credit. Before buying from anyone, check that the guarantee is written in the product page.
Is shipping included in the boxes per kg?
In the KiloBox Trial 3 kg (54,90 €, Italy only) yes. For the other boxes shipping is free in Italy from 139 € and in Europe from 249 € per order, islands excluded; below these thresholds the cost appears in the cart before payment.
